The lecture slides highlight the various types of core samples and measurements collected by the petroleum industry. The lecture aims to correlate the different types of logs collected with the properties that they measure. An overview of the collection strategies and the technology used to recovery data is discussed.

A potential lecture layout could include a 10-15 minute review of the Exercise discussed in the previous lesson (see the 'Tools of the Industry' lecture information for the exercise), followed by an introduction to this lecture information (25 slides, ~40 minute presentation) and exercise material (~10 minutes).

Objectives:

At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Correlate common well logging tools with the property they measure
  • Describe how well samples help petroleum geologists and geophysicists discover and model the reservoir, source, and seal
  • Interpret the information together to provide detailed descriptions about the rock formation and whether the formation is oil and gas bearing

This course, based on teaching material from Dr. Fred Schroeder (formerly of Exxon/ExxonMobil), reflects on the geology and geophysics basics for the petroleum industry. General geology and basic geophysics are not required, but helpful with the material.
