IRIS has existed throughout my academic career, and it is such a vital component of my research and teaching that time without IRIS is unthinkable. I have also developed a deep appreciation of IRIS through contacts with foreign organizations, working with analogue seismograms, and serving on the GSN standing committee. To me, IRIS also represents something beyond just seismology. It nurtures interaction and collaboration amongst domestic and international geoscientsts, and is also becoming a bridge between society and seismology. With the completion of the EarthScope program and recompetition in 2018, there will be challenges and excitements going forward, and it will be an honor and a privilege to serve IRIS and the greater community at this time of major transition.
