This tour will offer overviews of the ASL and FACT facilities described below.
The mission of the ASL is to enhance public safety and reduce losses from geologic and earthquake hazards. This mission is achieved through the operation of high quality monitoring networks including the Global Seismographic Network (GSN), and US backbone network, support of regional networks, and instrument testing. ASL is operated by the USGS under the National Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP).
The Facility for Acceptance, Calibration and Testing (FACT) at Sandia National Laboratories serves as the primary resource for staff involved in seismic and infrasound station component evaluation. The FACT site has several shallow boreholes, an underground seismic pier, an infrasound isolation chamber and a recently purchased shake table system. The FACT site also maintains several remote field sites with shallow vaults suitable for seismic or infrasound array-oriented research. This work is funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Verification (NA-221).
