IRIS has a crucial role in seismology and related areas of geophysics, both in maintaining and expanding its core functions as well as providing leadership for new initiatives. The coming years will be challenging ones, as we will receive NSF’s decision on the NGEO proposal and hopefully begin implementation of the new structure, in cooperation with UNAVCO. We will also be undertaking the last stages of US array, with the completion of the Alaska component. These events will require significant changes to traditional IRIS functions, but also provide new opportunities. I have been involved in IRIS governance for many years, and have seen IRIS grow from a small effort to what it is today. The science of seismology is more challenging and exciting than ever, and requires an efficient and modern consortium to provide the tools. I am enthusiastic about helping IRIS move into the next phase.
