As seismologists, we are incredibly fortunate to have an organization such as IRIS. This fact is brought home to me time and again when I access data in other disciplines and in the astonished and envious reaction when I describe our resources to a colleague in another branch of geophysics. Following the decision on the NGEO proposal by NSF, we hope IRIS will be called to continue to maintain and improve its core services while it establishes an even closer partnership with UNAVCO and considers new ventures into large-N data and instrumentation, high performance computing and large scale data mining, ocean-based seismology, and opportunities following the sunset of the EarthScope program.
My career would be virtually unrecognizable without IRIS resources, be it global seismic data, PASSCAL experiments, data access via the DMC and other federated data centers, and tools and software hosted by IRIS. I believe IRIS can be a world leader in modeling curation and access of data as other disciplines in Earth Science strive to follow suit, and that seismologists will profit from new resources in return. After serving on various working groups and a standing committee, I would consider it a privilege to help guide IRIS in its new incarnation and would work towards balancing support for core services and new opportunities.
