STATEMENT

The mission of IRIS is to advance seismological research and education. It has accomplished this with great success by continually evolving to meet the changing needs of the community. Change is on the horizon for IRIS. I am running as a candidate for the Board of Directors because I want to help shape the future of IRIS. Community oversight and governance, policies that facilitate data exchange, and a commitment to both permanent and temporary instrumentation must be central to this future. Training the next generation
of geoscientists and educating the public about seismology must continue to be at the forefront. The future must also consider new types of instrumentation and technology along with better coverage of the seafloor and polar regions amid the reality of not-unlimited funds and the possibility of a merger with UNAVCO.

My appreciation for IRIS is founded in my use of the data it acquires, archives, and distributes. This appreciation has deepened through my various experiences in IRIS governance and opportunities to mentor IRIS summer interns. A central theme of my research, which utilizes data collected by the Global Seismographic Network, PASSCAL, and EarthScope programs, is the rheology and dynamics of the crust and mantle— an area of considerable overlap with the geodetic community. As a member of the board, I would be honored to contribute my perspective and help IRIS and the seismological community plan for the future of the facility.
