I am a volcano seismologist whose research interests involve seismology and acoustics, in both the subaerial and submarine environments. I am motivated to run for the IRIS Board of Directors, because after years of relying on IRIS for support in both my research and teaching, it is time to give back. Whether I am accessing metadata via SeismiQuery, downloading videos to explain complex topics to my students, making use of instruments from IRIS facilities, or making my own data available to others via the DMC, IRIS has played a fundamental part in facilitating my scientific endeavors. Further, I am a strong advocate of community governance, and believe that the strength of IRIS is in its membership and the willingness of that membership to participate in steering its future. At Western Washington University, I have been deeply involved in the shared governance structure, and this provides me with an important perspective on the benefits and challenges of engaging a broad community in the critical decisions that shape our future. I firmly believe that the best science is science done in an open and collaborative manner, and I am committed to ensuring a future for IRIS that provides seismologists with the opportunity to collaborate and engage with high quality data.
As a geophysics educator, the strengths that I will bring to the IRIS BOD center on communication, education, and collaboration. Communication with the IRIS membership and user community will be of particular importance in the coming years as we move toward a future that involves a new structure for IRIS and UNAVCO. As a member of the oversight committees of first OBSIP and now OBSIC, I have seen the importance of acquiring community input into the workings of our facilities, and in directing their growth and evolution. I look forward to participating in that process in this next step for IRIS.
