2021 Distributed Acoustic Sensing: Scientific Frontiers and Community Needs
Virtual, Eastern Daylight Time Friday, August 13th, 2021, 11am–3pm

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has attributes that make it a transformative technology in geosciences and engineering. The increased interest in DAS arises from its potential to be used in continuous arrays that are kilometers in length while providing spatial resolution of meters and frequency response from millihertz to kilohertz. This 4-hour workshop started with an overview of DAS, focused on the science results emerging from DAS utilization through talks and popup presentations, and used limited breakout sessions to explore the community’s needs and vision for the utilization of this new technology. A recording of the workshop is now available on YouTube.

We planned to highlight a range of DAS topics including:

  • Low-frequency DAS and geomechanics observations
  • Environmental seismology
  • Infrastructure, engineering, near surface applications
  • Cryosphere & hydrology applications
  • Time-lapse imaging and monitoring
  • Deployment techniques and data management in the field

Participants will:

  • Be able to identify applications of DAS and needed technical developments (both engineering and scientific)
  • Be able to describe major challenges and next steps for supporting DAS science and applications in the long term
  • Become part of a developing network of potential DAS users, get connected to the DAS Research Coordination Network, and learn about future opportunities for hands-on DAS experience
  • Engage in conversations about the role of DAS between the geodesy, seismology, and engineering communities
