Meeting Summary

The IDSC was briefed by Woodward and Hafner about the current IRIS engagement with Lawrence Livermore National Lab to expand seismic station coverage in the Caucasus and Central Asia. IRIS is serving as a technical advisor to a Department of Energy project aimed at establishing station coverage that adds 6-10 fully equipped broadband stations with other auxiliary instruments per country, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. Once online, these stations will stream data with real-time telemetry to a public archive, most likely the NSF SAGE DMC. The stations will be designed similarly to Alaska TA stations. Long-term O&M of these networks is beyond the scope of this initial project and this open questions provides an opportunity for organizing traditional capacity building activities and creating long-term IDS-level engagement with scientists in these countries. The IDSC discussed opportunities for cooperation between countries, including establishment of RAMP instrument pools, collaborative hazard assessment, and training courses involving travel between countries and the U.S. We will continue to explore protential opportunities as the international COVID situation continues and prevents in-person activities.
