A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 4:35:30 AM local time 110 km east-northeast of Taron, New Ireland Island, Papua New Guinea. The hypocenter was 378 km below Earth’s surface and this depth accounts for the light ground shaking and minimal impact of this earthquake.
