WEBINAR: Seafloor Fiber Optic Sensing

Wednesday, March 30, 2022, 12:00pm ET
Virtual

Please join us for the webinar: Seafloor Fiber Optic Sensing on Wednesday, March 30 from 12:00 Noon - 3:00 PM Eastern.

Register here for this virtual event.

Organized by: DAS RCN Marine Geophysics Working Group & IRIS
Moderated by: Nate Lindsey and Meagan Wengrove

Recently developed photonic measurement techniques, including optical phase interferometry, Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and State of Polarization (SOP), are lowering the barrier to continuous observations of elastic, acoustic and thermal wavefields at the seafloor. Fiber optic datasets, collected using existing telecommunications and science cables, provide first-of-kind recordings of earthquakes, ocean/solid-earth interactions, hydrodynamic phenomena, and marine mammals. The Spring Webinar will highlight some of the latest work in this space, and present new open-access datasets for the general science community to dive in to this emerging field for themselves. Please see the attached flyer for more information about the speakers.

This event will be held in Zoom Webinar format and will feature the following presentations along with time for Q&A. A recording will be made available on our YouTube playlist after the event.

  • Léa Bouffaut, Cornell University
DAS4Whales: A Case-Study of Baleen Whale Monitoring using Distributed Acoustic Sensing

  • Ethan Williams, CalTech and William Wilcock, University of Washington
A Community Test of DAS and DTS on the Ocean Observatories Initiative Regional Cabled Array
  • Han Xiao, University of California, Santa Barbara
The Moving Sources of High-Frequency Microseisms

  • Pierre Martz, Infinera Corp.
Seismic Detection and Localization using Submarine Cables

  • Mikael Mazur, Nokia Bell Labs
Environmental Sensing using Coherent Optical Transceivers

Use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing is rapidly expanding in our community, prompting the initiation of an Distributed Acoustic Sensing Research Coordination Network to facilitate workshops, tutorials, and other opportunities for sharing ideas and resources. This webinar is one in a planned series on different topics within Distributed Acoustic Sensing.
