Mike is an Associate Professor at Miami University, where he joined the Geology Department in 2005 after a Ph.D. in Geophysics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an endowed postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His overarching goal is to help people better understand the physical processes happening within the Earth, with a focus on the structure and deformation in subduction zones. Mike carries the theme of natural hazards through his courses and provides research opportunities for students through seismic experiments in the Pacific Northwest and Mexico investigating earthquakes and recently discovered forms of fault motion called episodic tremor and slip. He is currently working to further integrate his research and teaching activities through a funded project to expand the inquiry-based learning approach to new classes and undergraduate research experiences.
