New Mexico High School Student Receives 2010 IRIS Science Award

The 4th Annual IRIS Science Award at Socorro High School was given to Moaaz Soliman on May 12, 2010. The award consisted of a certificate signed by IRIS Board Chair Susan Beck of the University of Arizona and IRIS Consortium President David Simpson and was accompanied by a $500 check. Richard Aster, Principal Investigator of the IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center and Professor of Geophysics at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, coordinated the award which was presented on behalf of IRIS by Dr. Aster's wife, Jan Tarr, at a ceremony at Socorro High School. The IRIS Science Award recipient is selected each year by the science faculty at Socorro High School, in association with Dr. Aster, to honor a graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional aptitude and career interest in science. Mr. Soliman, who achieved a near-perfect GPA of 4.845, will continue his education this fall at New Mexico Tech with plans to study chemistry and biology.
