New Mexico High School Student Receives 2012 IRIS Science Award

The 6th Annual IRIS Science Award at Socorro High School was given to Brittani Webb on May 9, 2012. The award consisted of a certificate signed by IRIS Board Chair Brian Stump of Southern Methodist University and IRIS Consortium President David Simpson and was accompanied by a $500 check. Eliana Arias-Dotson, Senior Staff Scientist at the IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center at New Mexico Tech presented the award on behalf of IRIS at a ceremony at Socorro High School. The IRIS Science Award recipient is selected each year by the science faculty at Socorro High School, in association with Dr. Rick Aster, Principal Investigator of the IRIS PASSCAL Instrument Center and Professor of Geophysics at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, to honor a graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional aptitude and career interest in science, engineering, or medicine.
Brittani will attend one of the New Mexico Universities (with a final decision still pending) as a pre-med student majoring in biology with a minor in psychology.
She plans to attend medical school with the goal of becoming a family practitioner working in rural New Mexico communities. In addition to her academic talents, Brittani is an accomplished athlete who has completed numerous triathlons and helped lead the Socorro High School Girls Golf Team to first place at the 2012 New Mexico High School Championship this May, where she finished an individual fifth in the state.
